Boston Public Health Commission Board Approves Tighter Tobacco Regulations

In an effort to reduce exposure to the harmful effects of tobacco, the Boston Public Health Commission board today approved banning the sale of tobacco products at health and educational institutions, including pharmacies and drug stores and college and university campuses. The ban is effective in 60 days.

Boston EMS, BPHC 1st in Nation to Use Patient Tracking at Flu Clinic

At a flu clinic today at the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), the Commission’s Infectious Disease Bureau and Boston EMS are using patient tracking system technology to track recipients of the vaccine. This is believed to be the first use of the technology in this way. The technology was originally purchased in 2006 to track patients in emergency situations.

Más niños con hambre en los Estados Unidos

En 2007 el número de niños que padecieron hambre en los EE.UU. llegó a 691 mil. El diario El Universo reporta que el Departamento de Agricultura informó que el año pasado casi uno de cada ocho estadounidenses tuvo problemas para alimentarse adecuadamente. Massachusetts: Doctors are afraid of their patients

According to the Boston Globe, a survey carried out by The Massachusetts Medical society has shown that physicians are practicing "defensive medicine" on more than 20% of their patients. The reason is that doctors are scared of being sued by the patients. It is been estimated that the extra tests, referrals and other extra procedures are adding annually $1.4billion to annual healthcare costs in Massachusetts.

New national initiative seeks to promote medication safety in the elderly

Campaign 2011 is a project designed to educate seniors, caregivers, providers and the public-at-large about potential dangers involved when medications are improperly and/or over used in one of our most vulnerable populations. The campaign will be both national and state focused, bringing interactive workshops and many other public education opportunities to communities, senior centers and public venues over the next two years.
