Latino Immigrant Community Denounces Military Coup in Honduras

By TuBoston.com
Chicago, IL. The National Alliance of Caribbean and Latin American Communities (NALACC) emphatically denounces the military coup against President Manuel Zelaya.  NALACC unequivocally condemns the use of violence and military repression to obtain political power.  The military coup in Honduras is, in effect, a blow to the Honduran people and a significant setback to the fledgling democratic process in the Central American nation.

NALACC joins the international community, including the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations, the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), the European Union and the Bolivarian Alternative (ALBA) in demanding the immediate, safe and unconditional return of President Zelaya, democratically elected by the Honduran people, to his constitutional functions.

The military coup in Honduras has been accompanied by other acts of violence, including the arbitrary detention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patricia Rodas, the Mayor of San Pedro Sula, and other Ministers and government officials.  NALACC demands that their physical safety and security be respected and that they be released immediately.

NALACC inherently understands how devastating poverty and political instability fuel migration flows as people rightfully seek safety and survival.  We stand in solidarity with the Honduran people in their human right to a dignified way of life and in their constitutional right to freely participate in the democratic process.  NALACC urges respect for the will and dignity of the Honduran people and for the reinstatement of Honduras' constitutional and democratic order.
