Friends of Christopher Columbus Park Host 4th Annual Gala

By TuBoston.com
Friends, families, businesses and visitors to Boston who have long enjoyed concerts, fireworks and just a little peace and quiet at the North End's beautiful Christopher Columbus park (located on the Waterfront) are invited to lend their support at the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park Gala Celebration "A Park for All Seasons" on Friday, November 21, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m, at the InterContinental Boston Hotel, 510 Atlantic Avenue.  Tickets are available for $100 each; call 781.639.6002 or email info@foccp.org.  Festive dress is encouraged.

The 4.3-acre park (located on the harbor between Commercial and Long Wharves) was designed back in 1974, when Boston's waterfront was little more that a strip of abandoned piers and parking lots.  The renewal project, started in 1999 by the Mayor's office, transformed the fading lawns and made major improvements to several quarters of the park, including expanding the grass areas; adding a dual-purpose, circular performance section; and enlarging the tot lot.

The improved Christopher Columbus Park opened in July 2003 and that's when The Friends began their additions to Mayor Menino and the Boston Parks & Recreation Department's very generous start. Dan Nuzzi, president of the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park committee, shares, "From extra spotlights highlighting the Rose Kennedy Garden and the restored Christopher Columbus statue to the new addition of holiday lights along the promenade and supplementary perennial flowers in the park's display beds, the Friends have improved and heightened the beauty of the park.  For all of us, this is our backyard and we treat it as such...with respect and care."
