On Wednesday, Boston EMS will host the grand opening and dedication of the Medical Intelligence Center (MIC) in honor of Deputy Superintendent Stephen M. Lawlor, who died of cancer in 2005. Members of the Lawlor family, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Boston Public Health Commission Executive Director Barbara Ferrer, Boston EMS Chief Richard Serino, other agency representatives and friends and family will be on hand for the ceremony.
The MIC is a multi-purpose facility built primarily as a space for EMS, hospitals, community health centers, and public health representatives to collaboratively manage the medical aspects of an emergency. The state of the art facility will help improve communications and coordination and will strengthen relationships between the different community and public health agencies. The space is yet another piece in Boston’s overall emergency preparedness efforts.
Stephen Lawlor, a Dorchester native, served Boston EMS for 27 years, working his way up through the ranks. As Dep. Superintendent, Lawlor helped lead the planning of several large-scale events such as Boston’s First Night, the July 4th Celebration on the Esplanade, and the Boston Marathon.
